How I Survived The Darkest Season of My Life

Grief
changes you. It shakes the very foundations of who you are. It tests your strength, your faith, and your ability to keep living when life feels too heavy to bear.

This is my story — a story of pain, survival, and hope.

💔 The Call That Shattered My World

I still remember the moment my phone rang. I was in Abuja, going about my day as usual. The voice on the other end told me something that froze my heart:

My wife, our three children, and my brother-in-law had been involved in a terrible accident in Enugu.

I immediately left everything behind and traveled to Enugu. Nothing could have prepared me for what I met there.

My little boy, Divine, only 4 years old — my cheerful, curious, always-smiling son — was gone. Just like that.

The accident had taken him instantly. His siblings and my wife had survived but were badly injured and admitted to the hospital. Their hospitalization lasted nearly a month.

🏥 The Month That Changed Everything

Those days in the hospital felt endless. My wife, though wounded and grieving, tried to stay strong for everyone else. She held on with a resilience that still amazes me.

I, on the other hand, was breaking inside.

Burying Divine was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. No parent should have to see their child’s coffin. After the funeral, when visitors left and condolences stopped coming, I was left with a deep emptiness.

🌑 My Four-Year Battle with Depression

What followed was not just sadness — it was depression.

I lost all energy, motivation, and sense of purpose. My mind replayed that tragedy over and over. Nights were sleepless, days felt endless.

This went on for almost four years.

My wife also suffered silently. The trauma affected her health so much that we lost a nine-month pregnancy — another devastating blow that reopened fresh wounds.

🙏 Finding Strength to Rise Again

I wouldn’t be here today if not for God, my family, and my friends who refused to let me go under.

They prayed with me, stayed with me, and sometimes just sat with me in silence. Slowly, my strength returned. Slowly, I learned to breathe again.

Depression taught me that it is one of the most devastating ailments a person can face — but it also taught me that healing is possible.

🌅 Life After Loss: What I Learned

Today, I still miss Divine every single day. But I have found peace. I have learned that life may never be the same after loss, but it can still be meaningful.

Here are some of the key lessons I learned through this journey:

Depression is real. It’s not weakness — it’s an illness that needs attention.

Support systems matter. Surround yourself with people who will hold you up when you can’t stand.

Faith is an anchor. My trust in God kept me from giving up completely.

Healing takes time. Don’t rush your recovery; let yourself grieve.

Talk about your pain. Silence makes depression worse.

Pain can transform you. If you let it, tragedy can deepen your faith and make you more compassionate.

🌟 A Message for Anyone Struggling with Depression

If you are reading this and you feel like life is too heavy right now — please hold on.

Talk to someone. Get help. Take one day at a time. And most importantly, don’t lose hope.

Key Lessons for everyone:

💥Depression is a real ailment — it’s not weakness.

💥Support systems matter — friends, family, and community can hold you up when you can’t stand.

💥Faith is an anchor — trusting God was the only thing that kept me from sinking completely.

💥Healing takes time — don’t rush the process, allow yourself to grieve.

💥Mental health awareness is crucial — talk about it, don’t keep it bottled up.

💥Loss can break you, but it can also build you — if you let it, pain can transform you.

💥Your life still has meaning. Your tomorrow can still be Beautiful.
